Queensland Solar Rebate & Incentives — What You Really Need to Know (2026 Guide)

If you’re thinking about installing solar in Queensland (QLD), it’s important to know how rebates and incentives work — what you can access, how much you might save, and which programs are only federal rather than state-specific. If you’re thinking about installing solar in Queensland (QLD), it’s important to know how rebates and incentives work — what you can access, how much you might save, and which programs are only federal rather than state-specific. Queensland residents rely mainly on federal government incentives, with limited state rebates available in specific circumstances.

☀️ 1. Federal Solar Rebate (STCs for Panels)

The main rebate Queensland homeowners get for solar panels is from the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES). Under this program, your solar system generates Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) — these act as an upfront discount on your installation cost

📉 How It Works

  • STCs are generated based on your system size (e.g., 6.6 kW, 10 kW) and how much electricity it is expected to produce until 2030.
  • Installers normally handle the STC paperwork for you and apply the rebate directly at the point of sale — you don’t claim it yourself
  • STC values decline over time as the scheme phases down toward December 2030.

💡 Typical rebate values in Queensland for common system sizes in 2026 range roughly from $1,800 to $2,800+ for a 6.6 kW system and higher for larger systems, depending on STC zone and market certificate price.

🔋 2. Federal Battery Rebate — Cheaper Home Batteries Program

Queensland residents can also access the federal battery rebate, part of the broader Cheaper Home Batteries Program that rolled out nationally from 1 July 2025. This offer provides a point-of-sale discount on eligible battery systems — typically around 30 % off the installed cost — through tradable certificates similar to STCs.

📌 Key Points

✔ Applies to new home battery systems installed after 1 July 2025
✔ Works via certificates claimed by your installer, reducing your upfront price
✔ The rebate structure changed from 1 May 2026 to a tiered rate, so installing earlier in 2026 maximises your savings.

Example impacts: Around $3,000-plus off a typical 10 kWh battery install before May 2026, with values tapering over time as the program progresses.

🏡 3. State-Specific Programs — What Queensland Offers

Unlike some other states, Queensland currently does not offer a broad state rebate for residential solar panels or batteries beyond federal programs — meaning no general cash-back scheme for panel installs at the moment.

That said, there has been specialised support available or targeted incentives historically, such as:

  • Solar for Renters programs offering benefits when landlords install solar for tenants
  • Occasional local council or pilot programs in certain regions
These tend to be limited in scope and require specific eligibility.

If you’re a landlord installing solar for rental properties, you may be able to access up to $3,500 in support under designated QLD programs that improve rental sustainability and attract tenants.

⚡ 4. Feed-In Tariffs — Ongoing Value After Installation

Even if there’s no standalone state rebate for panels in QLD, you can still earn value from your system via feed-in tariffs (FiTs) — credits you receive when your solar exports surplus energy to the grid.

  • In regional Queensland (Ergon network), the regulator-set feed-in tariff has been around 8.66 c/kWh for 2025–26.
  • In South-East Queensland (Energex network — including Brisbane), retailers offer competitive FiT rates that can vary widely (often up to ~10–12 c/kWh or more).

FiTs are not rebates, but they do provide ongoing value as credits on your electricity bills when you export surplus solar energy.

📊 5. Combined Savings — How Rebates & Credits Add Up

When you combine federal incentives with solar generation and export value:

✔ Federal STCs lower your panel installation cost significantly
✔ Federal battery rebate reduces storage costs if you choose to add a battery
✔ Feed-in tariff credits reward exported electricity
✔ Self-consumption (using solar on site) often saves more than exporting in many tariff structures

This mix of upfront rebates and ongoing FiT credits helps drive strong financial returns from solar and battery systems in Queensland.

📅 Timing Matters — STC Phase-Down & Program Evolution

Solar rebates via STCs are scheduled to continue until December 2030, with annual reductions in eligible value as the system phases down.

Similarly, the federal battery rebate structure becomes less generous over time — particularly under the tiered rates introduced in May 2026. Installing solar + battery sooner often means capturing higher rebate values before further declines.
