WA Solar Rebate & Incentives — Western Australia’s 2025–26 Guide

If you’re considering going solar in Western Australia (WA), it’s important to understand how rebates and incentives work in the state. While WA doesn’t offer a direct state rebate for solar panels themselves, there are several ways homeowners can reduce their upfront costs and make solar (and batteries) far more affordable — especially when paired with federal programs.

☀️ 1. Federal Solar Rebate — STCs (Solar Panels)

Even though WA doesn’t have a dedicated solar panel rebate like some states, you still qualify for the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) rebate. Under this national program:

🔹 Eligible rooftop solar systems generate Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) based on system size and location;
🔹 Installers typically apply these STCs as a discount at point-of-sale, reducing your upfront cost;
🔹 Rebates apply to solar systems up to 100 kW and gradually phase down as the scheme winds down before 2030.

💡 In practical terms, you could see savings of thousands of dollars on a typical home solar install after STCs are applied — making solar much more affordable across WA.

🔋 2. WA Residential Battery Scheme (State Incentive)

From 1 July 2025, the WA Government launched a state-level Residential Battery Scheme focused on solar battery storage, not panels. This is one of the most substantial clean energy incentives in the state and helps offset the cost of adding storage to your solar system.

🟦 State Battery Rebates

Under this scheme:

  • Synergy customers (metro areas): up to $1,300 rebate ($130 per usable kWh, capped at 10 kWh)
  • Horizon Power customers (regional areas): up to $3,800 rebate ($380 per usable kWh, capped at 10 kWh)
  • Rebates apply to new home battery installations and are in addition to federal incentives.

👉 These rebates make adding storage much more attractive, reducing the cost to install a battery and capture more value from your solar generation.

💡 Interest-Free Loans

The WA scheme also offers interest-free loans (up to $10,000) to help cover:

  • Battery systems
  • Solar + battery packages
  • Hybrid inverters and upgrades to integrate storage
Loans are typically available for eligible households, particularly middle-income earners.

⚠️ Important Eligibility Notes

To qualify for the WA battery rebate and loans:
✔ You must be a WA resident and a Synergy or Horizon Power customer
✔ The battery must be new and have a usable capacity of at least 5 kWh
✔ Installations before 1 July 2025 are not eligible
✔ Batteries must typically be connected to a Virtual Power Plant (VPP) — participation in VPP programs is often required for eligibility.

📈 Stacking State & Federal Incentives

The real savings come when you combine the WA state rebate with federal incentives such as:

✔ STCs on solar panel systems (reducing panel installation costs)
✔ Federal battery rebate (30 % discount under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program)
✔ WA Residential Battery Scheme rebates + loans

When stacked together, these programs can dramatically cut costs — for example:

  • WA state battery rebate + federal battery discount
  • Federal STC credits on your solar panels
This stacked approach maximises your savings and boosts your return on investment.

🔌 Distributed Energy Buyback — Extra Value

In addition to rebates, WA residents can benefit from the Distributed Energy Buyback Scheme (DEBS), which offers payments for surplus electricity exported to the grid — including solar and battery exports. DEBS typically pays higher credits during peak times and lower credits off-peak, providing extra financial value for exported solar.

📉 Why Timing Matters

Because federal and state programs are evolving:
✔ The federal SRES rebate for panels is phasing down through to 2030.
✔ The WA battery rebate and interest-free loan funding are limited to a certain number of households, so acting early increases your chances of securing support.

This means installations completed sooner — especially before rebate capacities are exhausted — can yield higher savings compared with waiting.

🛠 Make the Most of Solar Rebates in WA

To unlock maximum savings:
✔ Choose a solar + battery system that qualifies for both federal and state rebates.
✔ Ensure your installer is Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA)-accredited so your rebates aren’t jeopardised.
✔ Check VPP requirements if applying for state battery rebates.
✔ Compare installer quotes and rebate amounts before committing.
