Australia’s battery storage rebate — officially called the Cheaper Home Batteries Program — is one of the biggest opportunities for homeowners and small businesses to make solar battery storage more affordable and worthwhile. Launched on 1 July 2025, this federal initiative slashes the upfront cost of battery systems, accelerates payback, and boosts both energy independence and savings from rooftop solar systems.

🔋 What the Cheaper Home Batteries Rebate Is

The Cheaper Home Batteries Program provides a significant upfront discount on eligible home battery systems — typically around 30 % off the installed cost in 2025. This discount is delivered through Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs) under the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES), which installers trade on your behalf to reduce your out-of-pocket price at purchase.

Why this matters for Australian homeowners:
✔ Batteries become much more affordable
✔ Payback times shrink thanks to upfront rebate + energy savings
✔ You store more solar energy for use when grid power is expensive
✔ You unlock more value from your solar PV system

💰 How Much You Can Save

Under the 2025 structure:

  • Eligible batteries earn around 9.3 STCs per kWh of usable capacity
  • That equates to roughly ~$370 per kWh discount in 2025
  • For example, a 10 kWh battery could attract ~$3,300 – $3,720 off your installed price — reducing the total cost significantly.

With a typical battery costing thousands of dollars installed, this rebate can shave several thousand off your bill immediately, making battery storage far more accessible.

📋 Who Is Eligible

The rebate is not means-tested — so most households and small businesses can claim it if they meet basic conditions

🔑 Key Eligibility Requirements

✔ The battery has nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh
✔ Batteries are used with new or existing solar PV systems
✔ The system is installed and commissioned on or after 1 July 2025
✔ Your installer is SAA-accredited for battery installations
✔ The battery system is on the approved product list (e.g., STC-eligible)
✔ Batteries must be VPP-capable if grid-connected (in most cases)

📌 Important Notes

  • Only the first 50 kWh of usable capacity earns STCs, even if the battery is larger.
  • Each property can claim the rebate only once under the program.
  • Eligibility includes community buildings and small businesses, not just residential homes.

📅 Timeline & Changes

The rebate launched in mid-2025 and continues through to 2030, but the rebate amount declines over time as battery costs fall and STC factors taper down. Recent amendments scheduled from 1 May 2026 introduce a tiered rebate calculation based on battery size to maintain roughly 30 % support across various capacities.

Example of Tiered Structure (From May 2026):

  • 0–14 kWh: full STC factor applied
  • 14–28 kWh: ~60 % factor
  • 28–50 kWh: ~15 % factor
(This doesn’t change eligibility — just how many STCs each segment earns.)

🔌 What the Rebate Means for Your System

💡 Lower Upfront Costs

Rebates bring batteries into a more affordable price range — often reducing payback periods to ~6–8 years or less, depending on usage, tariffs and electricity rates.

⚡ Better Savings With Solar

By storing excess solar power for evening or peak usage, batteries help reduce grid imports when electricity is expensive. Combined with the upfront rebate, this makes solar + storage a much smarter long-term investment.

📉 Blackout & VPP Support

Many rebate‐eligible batteries are also capable of providing blackout backup and participation in Virtual Power Plants (VPPs), adding ongoing financial benefits or bill credits beyond the initial rebate.

🔎 Example Savings

Here’s how the rebate might reduce your battery cost:

Battery Size Approx. Rebate Notes
10 kWh ~$3,300 – $3,720 Typical point-of-sale discount
13.5 kWh ~$4,300 – $5,000 Larger systems get bigger rebate
20 kWh Calculated up to capped 50 kWh Only first 50 kWh earns rebate

These are estimates based on 2025 STC values and may vary with actual certificate prices and configuration.

📍 Ready to Claim the Rebate?

To capture the full benefit of the Cheaper Home Batteries Program:
✔ Choose an SAA-accredited installer
✔ Confirm your battery model and capacity are on the STC-eligible list
✔ Install and commission after 1 July 2025
✔ Make sure your quotation reflects the rebate up front

Installers typically apply the rebate at point of sale — meaning you don’t have to apply separately.

🧠 Why Acting Early Helps

Because STC values decline over time and rebate policies can evolve, installing your battery sooner rather than later usually maximises the rebate benefit — potentially saving you more upfront cash compared with waiting.
